Progressing cavity pump artificial lift technology has numerous advantages compared to other types of lift systems including: low capital investment, simple installation with minimal maintenance costs, quiet operation, no internal valves to clog or gas lock, capacity to pump oils and waters with solids, low power consumption, high system efficiency, portable and lightweight surface equipment and low surface profile for visual and heightsensitive areas. This technology uses a downhole progressing cavity pump driven via a sucker rod string, using a surface wellhead drive either by electric or hydraulic power. With the benefit of historical data, mature waterfloods and high temperature application, dewatering gas wells such as unconventional gas from coal seams, high water cuts, light crude oil with limits on aromatic content, to production applications for medium crude oil with limits on H2S and CO2, innovations have broadened application of this technology beyond heavy and medium sandladen crude oil and bitumen, such as SAGD.
